About Invstrz

Invstrz exists to answer a question that most investing content doesn’t take seriously enough: what do you actually do about pensions and investing when there’s no employer sorting it out for you?

If you’re self-employed, a sole trader, or run your own business, the default advice built for salaried employees — auto-enrolment, “put X% of your payslip away” — doesn’t map cleanly onto irregular income, business cash flow decisions, or the specific tax mechanics that come with working for yourself. This site is built around that gap: real decisions, explained clearly, for people without a payroll department making the choices for them.

Who writes this

Mr Invstr has spent years working in UK financial services, and has used that time — professionally and personally — to dig into how pensions, tax, and investing actually work for people without an employer scheme to fall back on, reading the rules directly rather than relying on secondhand summaries. This site exists to write those answers up properly: clearly explained, checked against the actual HMRC and gov.uk rules, and updated whenever those rules change.

I write under a pseudonym rather than a full byline. That’s a deliberate choice, not an attempt to hide a lack of standing — plenty of good financial writing is published this way. What matters is whether what’s written here is accurate, tested against real decisions, and updated when the rules change — not whose name is on it. Every effort is made to get the detail right, and corrections are made promptly and visibly when something’s wrong.

What this site is — and isn’t

This is: general information and education about pensions, ISAs, and investing for self-employed people and business owners, informed by a background in UK financial services and checked against official guidance rather than assumed.

This is not: regulated financial advice. Nothing on this site should be read as a personal recommendation. Everyone’s situation is different, and for anything involving significant sums or complex circumstances, speak to an FCA-regulated financial adviser before acting.

How this site makes money

Invstrz is free to read and funded primarily through affiliate relationships — where we link to a SIPP provider, investment platform, or other financial product and a reader signs up, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to them.

A few commitments on how that’s handled:

  • Affiliate links never determine what we recommend. Product comparisons and provider mentions are based on our own research into fees, features, and suitability — not on which providers pay the highest commission.
  • Every page with affiliate links is clearly marked. You’ll always be able to tell when a link is one we may earn from.
  • We don’t accept payment for favourable coverage. No sponsored placements dressed up as editorial content.

Accuracy and updates

Tax rules, allowances, and pension regulations change — sometimes annually, sometimes mid-year. Every article on this site includes a “last updated” date, and figures are checked against current HMRC and gov.uk guidance at that time. If you spot something that’s gone out of date, please let me know — corrections are genuinely welcomed.
